Apparel production in the Ashulia and Gazipur industrial belts resumed yesterday after a four-day shutdown, but violence in Ashulia disrupted operations by afternoon, leaving at least 37 people injured.
Despite tight security, miscreants attacked factories in Ashulia, forcing thousands of workers to flee. Production in Gazipur remained unaffected.
Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), expressed frustration over the violent behavior that overwhelmed security forces.
In a separate incident, drug manufacturers reached an agreement with agitating workers and plan to resume pharmaceutical production soon. The injured were taken to Ashulia Women and Children Hospital for treatment.
