Bangladesh is setting its sights on increasing annual fish production to 85 lakh tonnes by 2041, as Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim announced. 

This target represents a substantial 1.8 times increase compared to the production of 47.59 lakh tonnes recorded in the fiscal year 2021-22.

Minister Karim revealed the ambitious goal during a press conference held at the Department of Fisheries in the capital, organized to celebrate National Fisheries Week 2023. 

The country has established state-of-the-art laboratories adhering to international standards to facilitate safe and healthy fish production and export.

The government emphasizes the multifaceted use of fish, encouraging the creation of various products such as chips and cakes from fish to boost fish consumption further. 

The government is offering agricultural loans at favorable terms and low-interest rates to support those interested in exploring diverse fish applications.

The minister emphasized the importance of increasing conventional and non-conventional fish production in the country. 

Notably, the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has established a ‘live gene bank’ dedicated to conserving small indigenous fish, with over 100 species already included.

In the 2022-23 period, Bangladesh generated more than Tk 4,790 crore by exporting approximately 70,000 tonnes of fish and fish products. 

The country’s fish exports reach 52 countries, according to data from the fisheries ministry.
