Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has agreed to allow Bashundhara Group to restructure its loans, provided the proper procedures are followed.
The decision came after a meeting between Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmad Akbar Sobhan and the central bank governor on Thursday. Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governors Zakir Hossain Chowdhury and Kabir Ahmed, along with the group’s advisor Ahmed Jamal, were also present.
Central bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said Sobhan assured the governor that Bashundhara Group had not defaulted on any loans. He also highlighted that a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) report on money laundering had created difficulties for the group’s banking relationships both locally and internationally.
In response, the governor clarified that Bangladesh Bank had no involvement in the CID report. He stated that Bashundhara Group could proceed with loan rescheduling but must make the required down payment as per regulations. The governor noted that this would also help banks facing liquidity issues.
Bangladesh Bank has already established policies for loan rescheduling, meaning the central bank does not need to provide additional approval unless a borrower seeks special concessions.
The central bank also confirmed that it would not shut down any business, including Beximco, as its role is to support economic activities.
