Bangladesh Bank has urged the public to exercise caution while handling cash following recent media and social media reports suggesting that a large volume of counterfeit banknotes has entered circulation.
In a statement issued today, the central bank said the reports—appearing on Facebook, other social platforms, and in several daily newspapers—could cause unnecessary public concern and confusion.
It reiterated that producing, possessing, or using counterfeit currency is a serious criminal offense under existing Bangladeshi law.
The bank assured that it, along with law enforcement agencies, remains fully alert to the issue and continues to take “effective and coordinated measures” to prevent the spread of fake notes.
Bangladesh Bank also advised citizens to check essential security features when receiving cash, including watermarks, raised print textures, security threads, color-shifting ink, and micro-lettering, which are standard on genuine banknotes.
To reduce risks, the central bank encouraged the public to conduct large transactions through banks or digital payment systems, which provide safer and traceable alternatives to cash.
It further instructed that anyone discovering or suspecting counterfeit notes should immediately inform the nearest police station or contact the national emergency service at 999.
The central bank said public awareness and cooperation are vital in combating the circulation of fake currency and in ensuring the continued stability of the financial system.
