Bangladesh has introduced tougher penalties for online gambling and fraud under the newly enacted Cyber Security Ordinance 2025.
According to Section 20 of the law, anyone found guilty of creating, operating, or promoting gambling-related platforms, apps, or devices could face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to Tk10 million, or both. The provisions also apply to individuals or organisations that advertise or support such activities.
The ordinance explicitly covers the promotion of gambling on social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, Google, WhatsApp, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter).
The High Court has directed authorities to take immediate steps to curb online gambling nationwide. Media outlets and digital platforms, both domestic and international, have been asked to remove or block websites, apps, links, and advertisements linked to such activities.
Officials said the move aims to curb cybercrime and strengthen public safety. Citizens and organisations have been urged to avoid engaging in or supporting gambling-related promotions.
The government has stepped up monitoring of digital platforms in recent months amid growing concerns over the spread of online betting networks targeting young people.
