Bangladesh’s interim government has approved a new three-year export policy to double annual export earnings to $110 billion by 2027.
The National Export Policy 2024-27, endorsed by the Council of Advisers on Thursday, focuses on expanding priority sectors and addressing current economic issues.
Md Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, announced that the policy adds handicrafts and vegetables to the list of priority export products. A new chapter emphasizing the development of the services sector and special attention to the textile fabrics and spinning sector was also introduced.
During the meeting, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus directed officials to find a lasting solution to ongoing unrest in the readymade garments (RMG) sector, stressing the need for worker rights and stability. The Council expressed optimism that the RMG situation would improve soon.
Additionally, the Council approved an agreement with Qatar allowing Bangladeshi citizens serving sentences in Qatar to be transferred back to Bangladesh to complete their terms.
Based on recent media reports, a committee has also been established to investigate allegations against the Public Administration Secretary concerning appointments and transfers. The government reiterated its commitment to press freedom while urging the media to combat the spread of fake news.
The interim government will resume dialogue with political parties, including BNP, on Saturday as part of ongoing reform efforts.
