Bangladesh’s apparel exports to US surge

Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the United States grew by 26.64% in the first two months of 2025, reaching $1.50 billion, up from $1.18 billion in the same period last year, according to data from the US Department of Commerce’s OTEXA.
January alone saw a sharp 45.9% rise, with exports totalling $799.65 million. In volume, Bangladesh shipped 488.27 million square metres of apparel during January–February, up 23.38% year-on-year.
The data was released a day after the US imposed a 37% tariff on Bangladeshi goods, raising concerns over future competitiveness.
Industry experts suggest the surge may be linked to importers advancing shipments in anticipation of the tariff hike. Fazlul Hoque, former president of the BKMEA, said buyers likely stocked up early to cushion against price increases.
Bangladesh outpaced all major competitors during this period: India (25.70%), Pakistan (23.05%), Vietnam (11.14%), and China (8.85%).
Exporters credited competitive pricing, improved production capacity, and a focus on sustainability for the robust growth. However, they warned that higher US tariffs could erode this advantage, particularly as India and Pakistan face lower tariff rates of 26% and 29%.
Experts fear the new tariffs may reduce demand and further squeeze the US market. While some believe the impact could be limited due to similar tariffs on other countries, concerns over a broader global trade war and potential recession persist.
