Boro farmers reap benefits as prices rise

Bangladeshi farmers are fetching higher prices for freshly harvested Boro paddy this season compared to last year, thanks to strong demand, rising production costs, and inflationary pressures.
According to the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM), the average national price of fine Boro paddy rose to Tk 35.74 per kg in April 2025, up from Tk 33.95 in April 2024. Medium and coarse varieties also saw modest price increases.
The Boro crop, which makes up 55% of Bangladesh’s annual rice production, was cultivated on over 50.69 lakh hectares this season, targeting a total yield of 2.26 crore tonnes, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension.
Farmers from key rice-growing districts reported per maund (≈40 kg) prices ranging between Tk 840 and Tk 1,050 — up from Tk 770 to Tk 1,000 last year.
Tofayel Khan of Mohanganj, Netrokona, said he harvested 9–10 maunds per katha on 120 kathas of land and sold his crop for up to Tk 1,050 per maund. “This year’s good yield and higher price mean a solid profit,” he added.
Saidul Islam of Ajmiriganj, Habiganj, echoed similar sentiments, reporting prices of Tk 830–Tk 840 per maund, a rise from last year’s Tk 770–Tk 800.
However, not all are equally optimistic. Farmers in Sunamganj and Brahmanbaria reported better yields but lower selling prices compared to the previous year, suggesting regional price disparities.
