Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) has filed a Tk 2.0 billion defamation lawsuit against a client, Md. Murtoza Ali, at the First Joint District Judge Court of Dhaka.
The court has accepted the case and issued a summons against the defendant, according to a press release.
EBL alleges that Murtoza Ali, an account holder at its Chandgaon Branch in Chattogram, acted maliciously by filing a petition at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Chattogram. The petition accused EBL’s board of directors, managing director, and 46 senior officials of embezzling Tk 110 million.
Following the petition, media reports on the allegations surfaced, causing confusion among customers and harming the bank’s reputation, the statement said. EBL maintains that the accusations are baseless.
Citing reputational damage, EBL has sought legal redress, reaffirming its commitment to compliance and customer trust.
