A bulk carrier carrying 52,500 tonnes of wheat from Russia has anchored at the Kutubdia outer anchorage of Chattogram port, marking the arrival of the first consignment under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, the food ministry said.
The vessel, MV Parth, is part of a contract signed in January for the import of 200,000 tonnes of Russian wheat. According to officials, quality tests of the shipment have been completed, and preparations are underway to begin unloading without delay.
Of the total cargo, 31,500 tonnes will be offloaded at Chattogram port, while 21,000 tonnes will be discharged at Mongla port.
Alongside the Russian supply, Bangladesh is also sourcing wheat from the United States under commercial contracts. Earlier this month, nearly 50,000 tonnes of US wheat were unloaded at Chattogram.
The ministry said wheat from both sources will be delivered to government warehouses for distribution through social protection schemes aimed at stabilising supply and supporting vulnerable groups.
