Workers at a garment factory in Gazipur’s Konabari area staged demonstrations on Sunday, demanding timely payment of wages and improved workplace benefits.
According to police and witnesses, employees of Quader Synthetic Fibers Limited gathered in front of the factory early in the morning instead of joining their shifts, pressing a nine-point charter of demands.
Morshed Zaman, inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police (Konabari zone), said the workers began their protest peacefully and later submitted a written list of demands. Their primary demand is for salaries to be disbursed within 7–10 days of each month.
Other demands include payment of attendance bonuses even during medical leave, verification of medical leave by a designated doctor, adequate supply of medicines at the factory’s medical unit, a minimum Tk 150 overtime payment for night shifts, and settlement of annual leave payments by January each year.
The workers also sought permission to use basic button phones inside the factory and an end to dismissals without prior notice.
Aurangajeb Khan, an administrative officer of the factory, said management had agreed to address the concerns gradually. “The salaries will be paid within 16 days of the month, and the other demands will be fulfilled in phases,” he said.
Industrial Police officials said the situation remained under control and no violence was reported during the demonstration.
