Germany’s data protection commissioner has called on Apple and Google to remove the Chinese AI app DeepSeek from their app stores, citing concerns over illegal personal data transfers to China, Reuters reported.
Commissioner Meike Kamp said the Beijing-based company had failed to prove it complies with European Union data protection standards.
According to DeepSeek’s privacy policy, user data—including prompts and uploaded files—is stored on servers in China, where authorities have broad access under domestic law.
“The app does not offer adequate safeguards for personal data under EU regulations,” Kamp warned, highlighting the risks of mass surveillance and privacy violations.
The Commissioner’s office approached DeepSeek in May, urging it to align with EU data transfer rules or exit the German market. After receiving no response, enforcement action was initiated.
Germany’s move adds to mounting pressure on DeepSeek across Europe. Italy previously removed the app over transparency issues, the Netherlands banned it on government devices, and Belgium has issued warnings for public officials. Spain’s consumer watchdog has called for an investigation, while the UK has left usage decisions to individuals.
Apple and Google have yet to publicly respond to Germany’s request.
