Google to invest $15 billion in major AI data centre hub in India’s Andhra Pradesh

Google has announced plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a large-scale artificial intelligence data center hub in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, marking its biggest AI infrastructure investment outside the United States.
The 1-gigawatt facility, to be located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, will serve as a key component of Google’s global strategy to expand its cloud and AI capabilities.
According to a Reuters report, Google Cloud Chief Executive Thomas Kurian confirmed the investment during an event in New Delhi. Earlier state government estimates had placed the project’s value at around $10 billion, but the company has now substantially raised that figure.
The investment also aligns with Google’s broader efforts to scale up its data center footprint across Asia, with ongoing projects in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The move comes as global technology companies compete to strengthen their digital infrastructure, particularly in regions with fast-growing internet user bases.
India, with nearly one billion internet users, has become a critical market for cloud and AI investments. Major competitors, including Microsoft and Amazon, have also pledged multi-billion-dollar commitments to expand data center operations in the country.
With this latest announcement, Google’s total data center investment commitments for 2025 are estimated at around $85 billion worldwide, underscoring the escalating race to build the computing backbone for the next generation of artificial intelligence.
