Google is set to invest $6 billion to build a 1-gigawatt data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in what will be its first direct investment in such infrastructure in India, Reuters reported.
The facility is poised to become Asia’s largest by both capacity and investment, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital and energy landscape.
The project includes a $2 billion allocation for renewable energy infrastructure, reflecting Google’s broader commitment to sustainability and aligning with its parent company Alphabet’s $75 billion global data centre expansion plan.
Despite ongoing global economic uncertainty and shifting US trade policies, the investment underscores the tech giant’s confidence in India as a strategic digital hub.
According to the report, Andhra Pradesh has already attracted commitments for 1.6 gigawatts of data centre capacity, with a target of reaching 6 gigawatts over the next five years. To enhance global connectivity, the state also plans to develop undersea cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam.
While the project focuses on renewable energy to power the massive facility, state officials acknowledged that coal-based electricity would still be needed to ensure uninterrupted 24/7 operation, given the energy-intensive nature of data centres.
Google has yet to make an official statement, but Reuters noted that a formal announcement is expected in October, led by the Andhra Pradesh government.
