The Bangladesh government is considering introducing a dearness allowance for public servants in the upcoming national budget, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the advisory committee on government purchase at the Secretariat in Dhaka, Dr Ahmed confirmed that a committee has already been formed to examine the issue. However, he did not disclose the potential rate or structure of the proposed allowance.
The move comes amid rising inflation and growing demands from public sector employees for financial relief.
In response to a query on India’s recent import restrictions, Dr Ahmed said the matter would be discussed in a scheduled meeting later that day but declined to elaborate.
He also refrained from commenting on the government’s controversial decision to dissolve the National Board of Revenue (NBR), stating that the finance ministry would issue an official statement on the matter.
The announcement signals the government’s efforts to address economic pressures while managing political sensitivities ahead of the national budget set for June 2.
