The government has approved the purchase of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes and 25,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer to address increasing domestic demand.

The decisions were made during the 18th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGP), held on Wednesday at the Cabinet Division in Dhaka.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed chaired the meeting, which approved a total of 10 procurement proposals, according to a report from the state news agency BSS.

Under proposals from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, state-run Petrobangla will procure two LNG cargoes from Singapore-based M/S Vitol Asia Pte Ltd. Both purchases will be made from the spot market through international quotations. The first shipment will cost approximately Tk 5.49 billion, while the second is estimated at Tk 5.55 billion.

Separately, the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will import 25,000 metric tonnes of triple super phosphate (TSP) fertilizer from Tunisia’s Groupe Chimique Tunisien (GCT). The procurement, under a government-to-government agreement, is expected to cost around Tk 1.57 billion, with the per-ton price set at $513.75.

Officials said the imports are part of ongoing efforts to ensure energy security and meet agricultural input requirements ahead of the upcoming cultivation season.
