The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed to merge the fourth and fifth disbursements of its $4.7 billion loan to Bangladesh, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.

The combined payment will be made in June 2025, following an April review and final approval by the IMF Board.

Bangladesh has already received $2.3 billion in three installments from the loan, which was approved in 2023 to support the country’s economic stability.

The disbursements are contingent on Bangladesh meeting agreed-upon conditions to strengthen its economy. Some of these conditions, particularly those linked to budget support programs, require extended implementation periods.

“It was mutually decided that the two disbursements scheduled for FY2024-25 would be combined,” the press release stated. This adjustment reflects the time needed to fulfill certain reform measures.

The IMF’s loan program is designed to bolster Bangladesh’s economic foundations. The government works to meet structural benchmarks and policy commitments.
