The High Commissioner of Malaysia to Bangladesh, Haznah Md Hashim, reaffirmed her government’s commitment to ensuring job security for Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia during an interaction with diplomatic correspondents on Wednesday.

She emphasized Malaysia’s dedication to addressing any issues in cooperation with the Bangladeshi government to ensure the welfare of Bangladeshi workers.

“We are committed to that. We are in good cooperation with the government of Bangladesh to address any relevant issues,” Haznah said. She highlighted the serious approach her government takes towards the welfare of Bangladeshi workers, although she acknowledged the challenges posed by syndicates beyond the control of both governments.

“You just mentioned syndicates. Of course, there are things beyond our control. This is something beyond not only the Malaysian government but also beyond the control of the Bangladesh government,” she remarked, recognizing the complexities of regulating these illicit groups. Despite these challenges, the High Commissioner assured that both countries are committed to improving the situation.

Haznah praised Bangladeshi workers’ significant contributions to Malaysia’s economy and reiterated her government’s intention to ensure a conducive environment for them. “We want to ensure that everything is in place,” she said, noting that the situation would be reviewed periodically to align with the needs and demands of both countries.

During her interaction with the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB), Haznah stated that the deadline for Bangladeshi workers to reach Malaysia is May 31, as announced by her government in January. This deadline underscores Malaysia’s organized approach to managing foreign labor.

In addition to labor issues, the High Commissioner highlighted Malaysia’s efforts to provide world-class healthcare, education, and tourism facilities at affordable costs, reflecting the broader scope of bilateral cooperation.

Haznah also discussed the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between Malaysia and Bangladesh, expressing confidence in its eventual realization. “I am confident that it would happen,” she said, pointing to the potential for enhanced economic ties between the two nations.

DCAB President Nurul Islam Hassib thanked the High Commission for hosting the discussion, marking a continued dialogue aimed at strengthening the relationship between Malaysia and Bangladesh.
