Meta to launch celebrity-voiced AI chatbot

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is preparing to introduce celebrity voices for its Meta AI chatbot this week, according to sources familiar with the plan.
High-profile actors, including Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, and John Cena, will lend their voices to the digital assistant, enhancing user experience with a personal touch. This move is part of Meta’s ongoing push to compete with other AI developers, such as OpenAI and Google, in the rapidly growing generative AI sector.
The celebrity-voiced chatbot feature will allow users to choose from five voices, including Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key, and generic voice options.
Additionally, Meta will introduce the first version of its augmented-reality glasses at the conference and provide updates on other hardware products, including its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The Ray-Ban glasses, released last year, became the company’s first product to integrate an audio version of the Meta AI chatbot.
The celebrity voice feature will initially be available across Meta’s range of apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in the U.S. and other English-speaking markets.
Meta has been discussing lending their voices for AI projects with various celebrities, with Bloomberg first reporting these talks earlier this year. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently teased the new voice capability by posting a promotional video on Instagram featuring John Cena wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
This latest effort marks Meta’s intensified focus on generative AI, which aims to make the chatbot a more central feature in its apps. The company faces stiff competition from OpenAI, which introduced a similar audio feature for its chatbot earlier this year. However, OpenAI faced criticism when actor Scarlett Johansson accused the company of using a voice that resembled hers without her consent.
Meta’s assistant, capable of text-based interactions and generating images from user prompts, has undergone several iterations. Previously, Meta introduced chatbot “characters” based on celebrities like Paris Hilton and Snoop Dogg, though these text-based versions failed to gain significant traction. Meta is now focusing on AI Studio, which allows content creators to create chatbot versions of themselves.
