Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that the company will invest about $3 billion to expand its AI and Azure cloud-computing capacity in India.

The investment marks the company’s single largest expansion in India, which is seen as a key growth market due to its population of over 1.4 billion and low-cost internet access.

Speaking at a conference in Bengaluru, Nadella said Microsoft will train 10 million people in AI in India by 2030. During his visit to India early last year, Nadella pledged to provide AI skilling opportunities to 2 million people by 2025, focusing on individuals from smaller cities and rural areas.

Nadella’s recent visit included a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which they discussed Microsoft’s ambitious expansion and investment plans. As part of its global strategy, the company aims to bolster AI infrastructure and its data-center network.

Last week, Microsoft unveiled plans to invest $80 billion in fiscal 2025, with more than half of that amount going towards developing data centers to train AI models and deploy cloud-based applications.
