Tesla recalls 46,000 cybertrucks over panel detachment risk

Tesla has issued a recall for more than 46,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to a defect that could cause an exterior panel to detach, increasing the risk of accidents, according to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects nearly all Cybertrucks delivered so far. The defect involves a component known as the “cant rail,” an exterior panel attached with an adhesive that is prone to “environmental embrittlement,” making it susceptible to detachment.
While Tesla describes the part as “cosmetic,” the NHTSA warns that it could become a road hazard, posing risks to other motorists. The recall is another setback for the highly anticipated stainless steel Cybertruck, a flagship product for Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk.
The company initially dismissed two complaints in January, concluding that there was no issue. However, after receiving another complaint from the NHTSA in February and noticing discussions about the defect on social media, Tesla reopened its investigation. This led to a voluntary recall and a decision to use a different adhesive to secure the panel.
As of March 14, Tesla had logged 151 warranty claims that may be linked to the defect. The company has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.
The recall comes amid a turbulent period for Tesla, with declining demand for the Cybertruck and other models. The company is also facing backlash over Musk’s advisory role in President Donald Trump’s administration, a position that has drawn criticism from some consumers.
Market analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities described Tesla as being in a crisis, arguing that Musk must clarify how he plans to balance his political role with his responsibilities as Tesla’s CEO.
“Tesla is going through a crisis, and there is one person who can fix it… Musk,” said Ives. He urged Musk to provide clear details on the company’s vehicle production timeline and its plans for autonomous driving in Texas.
In addition to falling sales, Tesla has been grappling with vandalism incidents, including Cybertrucks being keyed in parking lots, and broader social movements opposing Musk. These challenges have weighed on Tesla’s stock price, further increasing pressure on the company’s leadership.
