The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has granted approval to Walton Digi-Tech Industries to commence local production of printed circuit boards (PCBs) specifically designed for handsets, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s electronics manufacturing sector.

PCBs are essential components comprised of insulating material, serving as the foundation for the placement and connection of various electronic elements like processors and sensors. The approval signifies Walton’s pioneering status as the first Bangladeshi company to domestically produce such critical components.

While Walton already produces PCBs for computers, mobile phone chargers, and batteries, this initiative represents its inaugural foray into manufacturing multilayer PCBs tailored for mobile phones. 

Initial approval has been granted to import raw materials and commence PCB production for a six-month period, subject to rigorous quality assessments.

The move holds promise for augmenting value addition within Bangladesh’s mobile manufacturing landscape, which presently heavily relies on imports for component sourcing. Industry insiders estimate that PCBs contribute between 5 to 7 percent of the total manufacturing cost of a mobile phone, emphasizing the significance of this development.

Following a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a BTRC delegation in February, Walton’s manufacturing capabilities were deemed adequate for PCB production. The company’s robust infrastructure, including equipment, testing facilities, and skilled manpower, positions it favorably to meet stringent quality standards.
