WhatsApp has begun introducing a real-time translation feature, allowing users to translate individual messages directly within the app, the company announced on 23 September.
The tool enables users to long-press a message and select ‘Translate,’ allowing them to download translations for offline use. It will work across one-to-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates.
Android users will also be able to enable automatic translation for entire conversation threads, ensuring all incoming messages appear in their chosen language.
WhatsApp stated that translations are processed on the user’s device, rather than on company servers, thereby maintaining the privacy of chats.
The rollout is gradual, starting with six languages on Android – English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users will initially have access to 19 languages.
The move brings WhatsApp closer in line with rival messaging apps that have already integrated translation features, while emphasising data privacy as a key differentiator.
