Once a deprived region, Xinjiang has undergone a remarkable transformation. It is now emerging as a major communications and logistics hub in Asia, thanks to the establishment of the Urumqi Land Port.

 Situated at the heart of the Silk Road, Urumqi, the province’s main city, shares borders with eight countries and has become a pivotal point for connectivity.

The cutting-edge Urumqi Land Port showcases state-of-the-art infrastructure strategically designed to drive high-quality development in the modern era. Urumqi City authorities have implemented a diverse range of tactics to advance the ‘one port and five centers’ concept in the central region of the Silk Road Economic Belt. These strategies encompass comprehensive planning, prioritization of development ventures, utilization of policies, establishing an extensive platform, focused project execution, and optimization of the business ecosystem.

With a sharp focus on cultivating ‘one port and five centers,’ Urumqi has attracted domestic and international resources. The region has successfully actualized its vision of fostering openness by establishing essential zones such as the Urumqi International Land Port Area, Airport Economic Zone, and International Textile and Garment Trade Center.

The authorities have skillfully employed policies to accelerate the construction of an expansive international comprehensive transportation hub, a national logistics center featuring land-port capabilities, and a comprehensive pilot zone for cross-border e-commerce.

The China-Europe Express (Urumqi) assembly and express center projects are pivotal among the five major platforms that have steered Urumqi’s transformation into a versatile multimodal transport hub and a significant grain and oil trade hub.

The Urumqi International Land Port Area has marked a momentous milestone in the development of the core region of the Silk Road Economic Belt. It has witnessed a surge in transportation activities, with over 6,500 China-Europe (Central Asia) freight trains departing since 2015. In 2022, the land port area experienced the passage of over 19,000 freight trucks, twice the number from 2021, and a notable 16.5% increase in China-Europe railway express trains.

Encompassing a vast planned expanse of 67 square kilometers, which includes the Urumqi China-Europe Railway Express Hub and a comprehensive bonded zone, the Urumqi Land Port Area emerges as a prominent venture in the development of the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt.

The rapid development and connectivity provided by the Urumqi Land Port are not only elevating the region’s economic prospects but also strengthening its position as a crucial player in Asia’s trade and logistics landscape.
