Amazon has announced plans to invest £40 billion ($54 billion) in the United Kingdom over the next three years, in a move hailed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as a “massive vote of confidence” in the UK’s economic prospects.
The investment will support the construction of two new state-of-the-art fulfilment centres in the East Midlands, scheduled to open in 2027, as well as previously announced sites in Hull and Northampton.
Each of the latter will create 2,000 jobs, further cementing Amazon’s status as one of the UK’s top ten private-sector employers, with 75,000 staff currently.
The expansion also includes new delivery stations across the country, upgrades to its 100+ operations facilities, enhancements to transport infrastructure, and new buildings at its London headquarters. Additionally, Amazon will redevelop Bray Film Studios in Berkshire.
Part of the investment includes a share of the £8 billion committed in 2024 by Amazon Web Services for UK data centres through 2028. The total also accounts for salaries paid to UK-based employees.
Prime Minister Starmer, whose Labour government came to power in 2024 with a focus on revitalising growth and attracting foreign investment, praised the announcement as aligning with Britain’s new industrial strategy.
Despite the upbeat development, Amazon faces regulatory scrutiny, as the UK’s grocery watchdog opened an investigation Friday into potential violations regarding timely payments to suppliers.
