A 100-megawatt solar power plant is set to be built in Madarganj, Jamalpur district, through a joint venture between China’s CREC International Renewable Energy Company and Bangladesh’s state-owned B-R Powergen Limited (BRPL).

The project will involve an investment of $170 million and is expected to be completed by December 2025.

The joint venture agreement was signed Thursday at Biduyt Bhaban in Dhaka. The Chinese firm will hold a 70% stake in the venture, while BRPL, jointly owned by the Bangladesh Power Development Board and the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (REB), will hold the remaining 30%.

Md Habibur Rahman, Senior Secretary at the Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) attended the signing ceremony as the chief guest. Rahman expressed optimism that Bangladesh would generate around 1,200 MW of electricity from renewable sources by 2030, as the country embraces green energy to mitigate climate change.

The project will also include the rehabilitation of 241 families, with the construction of a primary school, health center, mosque, market, pond, and graveyard.
