Bangladesh Bank has introduced a new series of banknotes in Tk 1000, Tk 50, and Tk 20 denominations, which entered circulation on Sunday.
Signed by newly appointed Governor Dr Ahsan H. Mansur, about Tk 2.0 billion worth of fresh notes have been distributed through 11 commercial banks. The general public will have access to the new notes starting Monday, 2 June.
The central bank also revealed redesigned versions of six more denominations—Tk 500, Tk 200, Tk 100, Tk 10, Tk 5, and Tk 2—under the theme “Historic and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh.”
The updated notes highlight iconic national symbols and landmarks, including the Shaheed Minar, the Supreme Court, Aparajeyo Bangla of the University of Dhaka, and the Sundarbans. Each note incorporates a watermark of the Royal Bengal Tiger and features enhanced security elements and vibrant colour schemes for improved anti-counterfeiting protection and visual clarity.
According to Bangladesh Bank, the full rollout of the redesigned notes will take place in phases, with the aim of both preserving national heritage and modernising the currency system.
