Bangladesh hits record LNG re-gasification as weather clears

Bangladesh’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) re-gasification hit an all-time high of 1,050 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) on Monday, following the resumption of regular LNG tanker berthing after weather disruptions in the Bay of Bengal.
According to official data, the previous record was 1,022 mmcfd on 18 March this year. Re-gasification dropped sharply to 558 mmcfd on 30 May after rough seas delayed LNG offloading.
Petrobangla data show that improved weather enabled multiple LNG tankers—carrying gas from Oman’s OQ Trading and Gunvor Singapore—to complete ship-to-ship transfers to floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) off Moheshkhali Island by Sunday and Monday.
The surge has boosted the country’s overall natural gas output to around 2,889 mmcfd, significantly increasing supply to industries, Petrobangla Chairman Md Rezanur Rahman told The Financial Express.
He expects LNG re-gasification to remain above 1,000 mmcfd until August, supported by increased spot market purchases to meet rising demand.
At least two LNG tankers had been stranded last week at the pilot boarding station, roughly 12km from the FSRUs, due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal.
Each LNG cargo delivered approximately 3.36 million British thermal units (MMBtu), helping restore and expand the country’s industrial gas supply.
