Beximco, one of Bangladesh’s largest conglomerates, has announced another round of layoffs affecting five more manufacturing units, citing financial difficulties and a lack of work orders.
The decision will affect nearly 8,000 employees across various departments, worsening the country’s ongoing crisis for garment workers.
According to sources, the affected units fall under Beximco Limited, a key division of the group. This follows a previous mass layoff of 40,000 workers across 15 apparel units due to a persistent shortage of export orders in Gazipur-based garment and textile factories.
“We are not receiving any work orders from local manufacturers, leaving us with no choice but to declare layoffs,” said Osman Kaiser Chowdhury, Director of Finance and Corporate Affairs at Beximco Group.
The crisis reflects broader challenges in Bangladesh’s garment sector, as declining demand, global economic uncertainty, and reduced orders continue to strain the industry.
