Pacific Jeans shuts down all CEPZ units after days of unrest

Leading denim manufacturer Pacific Jeans Group has announced the indefinite closure of all its eight factories inside the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) following three days of labor unrest and violent clashes among workers.
The shutdown, effective from 16 October, comes after a section of workers at Pacific Jeans Ltd allegedly halted production, disrupted electricity, and forced others to join their protest on 14 October. Management said the unrest later spread to other units, halting operations across the group.
Separate notices signed by Managing Director Syed M Tanvir cited repeated clashes between rival worker groups, vandalism, and attacks on officials. Despite directives to resume duties, protests continued on 15 and 16 October, leading to further violence inside factory premises.
The company said that the unstable environment and forced work stoppages made it impossible to continue operations safely. “For the safety of workers, employees, and factory assets, all factories of Pacific Jeans Group will remain closed until further notice,” the notices stated.
Officials said the group will decide on reopening once a “conducive environment” is restored.
Pacific Jeans Group, one of Bangladesh’s top denim exporters, employs more than 35,000 workers across its units — Pacific Jeans Ltd, Pacific Jeans Ltd-2, Jeans 2000, Universal Jeans, NHT Fashions, Pacific Accessories, Pacific Workswear, and Pacific Attires.
