European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed the European Union’s commitment to enhancing collaboration with Bangladesh and exploring new partnership opportunities, including a potential Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (CPCA).
In a letter to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus dated January 14, she emphasized the EU’s openness to discussing specific needs with sectoral partners and considering additional support aligned with ongoing initiatives.
The EU highlighted the substantial potential for investments in various sectors, including railways, climate adaptation, and digital services, under its Global Gateway initiative.
This interest follows a two-day introductory meeting on the CPCA held in November after delays due to political unrest. The EU remains Bangladesh’s largest trading bloc, accounting for over 58% of its total exports, particularly in the garment sector. With Bangladesh expected to graduate from least developed country status by late 2026, the EU’s support is crucial as it prepares for the eventual phasing out of zero-duty benefits under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences.
