The government has approved in principle a proposal to establish a Green Data Centre on the premises of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) in Hathazari, Chattogram, through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative.
The decision was made at the 12th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs, held on Thursday at the Cabinet Division Conference Room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to a report by BSS.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed chaired the meeting, which was attended by members of the interim government’s advisory council. The Posts and Telecommunications Division tabled the proposal.
The planned Green Data Centre is intended to serve as a secure and energy-efficient infrastructure for hosting digital services, data storage, and cloud computing facilities, which is in line with the government’s commitment to advancing digital transformation and sustainable technology.
Officials said the PPP framework would attract private investment and technical expertise for the project, reducing the burden on public finances while ensuring global standards in data management and environmental efficiency.
Details regarding the size, capacity, or timeline of the proposed data centre have yet to be disclosed.
