The government has approved the construction of a 50-million-litre-per-day water treatment plant in the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ) at Mirsharai, Chattogram, aiming to ensure a steady water supply for industries.
A joint venture of ZHEC-BOW-SMEDRIC has been awarded the Tk 518.61 crore contract for the project, which is expected to be completed by June 2026.
According to Md Helal Ahmed, the project director, the plant will be capable of treating 50 million liters of water daily and have a potential supply capacity of 100 million liters.
The project proposal, submitted by the Office of the Chief Adviser, was approved today by the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase.
Ahmed said the plant would boost investment prospects in the NSEZ, making the region more attractive to local and foreign investors. It will help industries, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and agro-processing, maintain regulatory compliance while supporting a sustainable industrial ecosystem.
He added that ensuring a reliable water supply will reduce risks associated with shortages, prevent production disruptions, and ensure smooth industrial operations.
The NSEZ, one of the country’s largest industrial zones, is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to regional economic growth.
