According to recent statistics released by the Bangladesh Bank, the government’s total net domestic borrowing, encompassing funds sourced from the banking system and non-banking channels, reached Tk 361.76 billion during the July-February period of the current fiscal year (FY2024). 

This amount constitutes approximately 23 percent of the target set in the national budget for 2023-24.

Net borrowing has declined compared to the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year, FY2023. In FY2023, the government borrowed Tk 511.76 billion during the same timeframe, which amounted to 36.4 percent of the target set for the 2022-23 budget.

Breaking down the net borrowing, the government’s borrowing from the banking system stood at Tk 249.69 billion in FY2024, constituting 18.9 percent of the budget target. This contrasts with Tk 466.06 billion borrowed during the same period in FY2023.

Meanwhile, the government’s net borrowing from non-banking sources increased in FY2024, reaching Tk 112.06 billion. This represents 48.7 percent of the budget target, up from Tk 45.7 billion, or 18.3 percent of the target, in the corresponding period of FY2023.
