US semiconductor giant Intel asserted its technological prowess in the competitive chip market on Tuesday, unveiling new technologies it claims will drive the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. The announcement comes as Intel faces strong competition from Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm, particularly in AI processors.
During his keynote speech at Taiwan’s Computex expo, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger introduced the latest Xeon 6 processors for servers and detailed the upcoming Lunar Lake chips designed for AI-enhanced personal computers (AI PCs).
“AI is driving one of the most consequential eras of innovation the industry has ever seen,” Gelsinger said. “The magic of silicon is once again enabling exponential advancements in computing that will push the boundaries of human potential and power the global economy for years to come.”
Gelsinger emphasized that Intel’s latest chips offer the best mix of performance, energy efficiency, and affordability. He highlighted the Gaudi systems, which are used for advanced AI tasks such as training models, claiming they cost a third of what competitors’ systems do.
Intel’s announcements came amid similar presentations by leaders of rival companies. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, AMD’s CEO Lisa Su, and Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon all touted their latest AI technologies during their keynote speeches at the expo.
Su and Amon focused on their companies’ advancements in AI-powered personal computers. Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled its Copilot+ AI PCs, which integrate AI features directly into the Windows operating system. These AI PCs will be offered by major manufacturers including Dell, HP, Samsung, and Lenovo, featuring AI capabilities on the device rather than relying solely on the internet.
In response to Qualcomm’s claims about the superiority of its AI PC chips, Gelsinger was unequivocal. “I just want to put that to bed right now,” he said. “Ain’t true!”
Intel, citing data from the Boston Consulting Group, projects that AI PCs will constitute 80 percent of the PC market by 2028.
Computex, held annually in Taiwan, is a premier technology showcase. Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is integral to the global tech ecosystem, producing essential components for products ranging from iPhones to servers running AI applications like ChatGPT.
As major tech firms invest heavily in AI, Taiwanese manufacturers play a pivotal role. The island produces the majority of the world’s most advanced semiconductors, which are crucial for cutting-edge AI research and applications. Taiwan’s government aims to leverage these capabilities to accelerate the adoption of AI technologies.
