Bangladesh has secured a significant boost to its energy security with a 15-year agreement to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar, the world’s top LNG exporter.

The deal, signed between QatarEnergy and Excelerate Energy, will see up to one million tonnes of LNG shipped annually to Bangladesh starting in January 2026.

Deliveries will be made to floating storage and regasification units, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for the country’s energy needs.

The agreement initially stipulates 0.85 million tonnes per year in 2026 and 2027, ramping up to the full one million tonnes from 2028 onwards. This long-term commitment underlines Qatar’s position as Bangladesh’s primary LNG supplier and strengthens its existing partnership.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s energy minister and QatarEnergy CEO, hailed the agreement as a win-win, solidifying ties with Bangladesh while supporting its economic development through reliable energy supplies.

This deal represents a major step forward for Bangladesh’s energy diversification strategy, reducing dependence on traditional fuels and paving the way for cleaner and more efficient energy solutions.
