Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction of the largest single-point sewage treatment plant in South Asia near Dhaka’s Aftabnagar.

The sewage treatment plant is the country’s first modern STP (Sewage Treatment Plant), with a capacity of treating 500 million liters of sewage.

On Thursday, the inaugural ceremony of the sewage treatment plant was organized at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the capital.

The relevant authorities say that the plant will play a significant role in improving the quality of water in the environment and the water of Rampura Canal, Balu River, Sheetalkshya River, and other water bodies.

The plant constructed in the eastern part of the Aftabnagar area is being praised as a milestone in the country’s waste management system.

The plant will produce approximately 45 metric tons of ash daily, which can be used as a raw material in cement factories.

Every day, 2 billion liters of waste are produced in Dhaka, of which the Dasher Kandi plant will be able to purify 20-25%.

By 2030, to hit the 100% waste management capacity target in Dhaka city, four more modern sewage treatment plants will be constructed in Pagla, Rayer Bazar, Uttara, and Mirpur.

An STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) has been constructed on 62 acres of land in Dasher Kandi for 3 forks. Among this, 1,106 crore 42 lakh taka has been received from the government fund, 10 crore taka from Dhaka WASA, and 2,366 crore taka from China Exim Bank.

The project’s work started on 1st July 2018 with Chinese funding. For one year, the management and operation of the plant were entrusted to the supervisory body, Hydrochina Corporation.
