Reddit has announced a significant partnership with OpenAI to integrate its content into OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT. This strategic move has positively impacted Reddit’s stock, which saw a 12 percent increase in extended trading following the news.

The partnership with OpenAI is part of Reddit’s broader strategy to diversify its revenue streams beyond advertising. This move follows a similar deal with Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, to provide content for training Google’s AI models. 

The Alphabet deal, valued at approximately $60 million annually, underscores Reddit’s efforts to leverage its vast repository of user-generated content for AI training purposes, positioning it as a valuable data source in the AI industry.

Under the new agreement, OpenAI will utilize Reddit’s application programming interface (API) to access and incorporate Reddit’s content into its AI models, including ChatGPT. 

This collaboration will enable ChatGPT to draw from the rich and diverse discussions hosted on Reddit, enhancing the chatbot’s conversational capabilities and breadth of knowledge.

Moreover, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner, potentially opening new avenues for targeted advertising leveraging OpenAI’s advanced AI technologies. 

This partnership aspect highlights the potential for innovative advertising solutions that combine Reddit’s extensive user engagement with OpenAI’s sophisticated data analytics.

The announcement has had an immediate positive effect on Reddit’s stock market performance. Shares rose 10.5 percent to $62.31 in after-hours trading. 

This increase adds to a nearly 12 percent rise in the stock since Reddit’s initial public offering (IPO) in March, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s growth prospects and strategic initiatives.
