U.S. President Donald Trump announced that tariffs on European Union (EU) products would generally be set at 25%, while duties on imports from Canada and Mexico are expected to take effect in early April.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Trump accused the EU of unfair trade practices, stating that the bloc was created to undermine the United States. “Let’s be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States,” he said.
The tariffs will target various EU products, including automobiles, as Trump argues that European trade policies have disadvantaged the U.S. He reiterated his push for “reciprocal tariffs” to counter what he calls an “unfair and unbalanced” trade system.
Trump has also signaled broader trade restrictions, including potential levies on pharmaceuticals and other key imports.
Since taking office in January, he has announced and later paused tariffs on Canada and Mexico, citing concerns over illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling. However, on Wednesday, he confirmed that duties in both countries would proceed as planned, with implementation set for April 2.
“The tariffs go on, not all of them, but a lot of them,” Trump said.
