Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said Tuesday in Dhaka that China is willing to assist Bangladesh in implementing the long-delayed Teesta River water-management project.

Speaking at a press briefing, Ambassador Wen stressed the project’s urgency for the welfare of riverbank communities. “The Teesta project should be implemented as soon as possible,” he said while underscoring Bangladesh’s sovereign right to decide on the matter.

Thousands have rallied across five northern districts in recent days, demanding immediate action to address the river’s recurrent floods and severe erosion. They have cited India’s upstream control of flows as a reason.

Bangladesh sought Chinese help in 2021, and Beijing recommended a revised plan in 2023. However, Wen noted that “we have yet to receive a response. ”

On trade, China aims to import Bangladeshi mangoes by May, alongside plans for guavas, jackfruits, and aquatic products. Meanwhile, Beijing has urged Bangladesh to finalize procedures for the Mongla Port expansion project.

China remains Bangladesh’s top investor, with $230 million in agreements signed since August and over $1 billion pledged for the China Economic and Industrial Zone in Chattogram. Wen called for swift approval of the industrial park, highlighting cooperation opportunities in the digital economy, renewable energy, and AI.

Referring to Bangladesh foreign adviser Towhid Hossain’s recent visit to China, Wen described it as a “clear political signal” of deepening bilateral ties.
