Trump threatens 25% tariff on Apple, smartphone makers over overseas production

Former US President Donald Trump has threatened Apple and other smartphone makers with a 25% tariff unless they shift production to the United States, escalating tensions over global manufacturing.
Speaking to reporters in Washington on Friday, Trump initially singled out Apple but later extended the threat to all smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung. “It would also be Samsung and anybody that makes that product; otherwise, it wouldn’t be fair,” he said, adding that the tariffs could take effect by the end of June.
Although Apple designs its devices in the US, most iPhones are assembled in China. The company has moved some of its production to India, but Trump has clarified that this will not satisfy his demand. “I expect their iPhones… will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,” he posted on Truth Social.
Apple rival Samsung also manufactures largely outside the US, primarily in Vietnam, China, and India. Together, Apple and Samsung account for about 80% of US smartphone sales.
Industry analysts say reshoring iPhone production is implausible. “It’s a fairy tale that is not feasible,” said Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities, noting that 90% of iPhone production remains in China.
Apple shares fell 3% on Friday, continuing a downward trend amid repeated trade threats. CEO Tim Cook has warned that tariffs could cost the company $900 million this quarter.
Analyst Susannah Streeter said consumers may face higher handset prices, putting pressure on middle-class buyers already dealing with rising costs.
