The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has formally requested a written proposal from Bangladesh outlining its commitment to lower import duties on American goods, as part of efforts to reduce the bilateral trade deficit.
In a letter dated 7 May to Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin, USTR Jamieson Greer welcomed Bangladesh’s willingness to engage in negotiations aligned with President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy.
“My team is ready to engage with Bangladesh to address the persistent bilateral trade deficit by reducing Bangladesh’s agricultural and industrial tariffs and non-tariff barriers,” Greer wrote. He also called for greater alignment on economic security issues.
Greer acknowledged Bangladesh’s reform initiatives in areas of interest to the US but urged further action on concerns such as labour rights violations and restrictions on digital trade. “I encourage the Government of Bangladesh to address other areas of unfair trade practices,” the letter noted.
The US currently runs a significant trade deficit with Bangladesh, largely due to high imports of ready-made garments. A formal proposal from Dhaka could pave the way for structured negotiations aimed at greater market access for US exporters.
“We look forward to receiving a written offer from your government so that we can commence formal negotiations,” the letter concluded.
