The World Bank has approved $250 million in financing to help Bangladesh strengthen transparency, accountability, and efficiency across key government institutions.
The funding, announced Thursday, will support the Strengthening Institutions for Transparency and Accountability (SITA) Project, aimed at modernising public sector operations and boosting fiscal governance.
The initiative targets five core agencies: the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the National Board of Revenue, the Planning Division, the Public Procurement Authority, and the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General.
“This investment will leverage digitisation to improve transparency and reduce corruption,” said Gayle Martin, the World Bank’s interim country director for Bangladesh. “It will also improve public service delivery and enhance trust in government institutions.”
The SITA Project will streamline operations, improve access to reliable statistics, modernise tax systems, and raise compliance—enhancing domestic revenue mobilisation and long-term fiscal sustainability.
According to the Bank, a separate development policy credit is also being prepared with the Bangladesh government to support broader reforms in tax, banking, investment, and social programme delivery.
“The project takes a holistic approach across five critical institutions to improve government effectiveness—an essential element for sustainable economic growth,” said Souleymane Coulibaly, World Bank lead country economist and project leader.
