Bangladesh reported 707 workplace deaths in 2024, with transport workers accounting for the highest fatalities at 273, according to a Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) report.

The agriculture sector ranked second with 102 deaths, followed by construction, rickshaws, and migrant workers. Among the deceased, 705 were men, and only two were women.

The report, based on newspaper analyses from January 1 to December 15, also revealed 229 incidents of worker torture, leading to 113 deaths.

Key causes of workplace deaths included road accidents, roof collapses, electrocution, fires, cylinder explosions, and lightning strikes.

Over the past decade, over 8,000 workers have lost their lives in workplace accidents, with the highest annual death toll of 1,200 recorded in 2019, followed by 1,053 deaths in 2021.
