The government has set a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps for 4G services in Bangladesh, in a move aimed at improving telecom service quality.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, announced the decision in a Facebook post on Sunday, reports UNB.
The new policy was approved at a meeting of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) last week, following expert consultations.
From September, BTRC will conduct monthly network performance checks and issue rankings, including a list of the 50 worst-performing sites.
“This is new for Bangladesh and aligns with international best practices,” Taiyeb said, adding that telecom operators have historically underinvested in 4G, resulting in declining service quality.
Under the updated Quality of Service (QoS) framework, operators must ensure a minimum 4G speed of 10 Mbps in drive tests, reduce call drop rates, and submit mandatory monthly performance reports.
Other revised benchmarks include:
Call setup success rate: 99% at network level, 98% at district level
Call drop rate: maximum 1% for 2G, 1.5% at sub-district level
4G connection success: 99% at network level, 98.5% at district level
Data upload speed: minimum 2 Mbps
The new QoS standards will also apply to fixed internet, telephony, and non-terrestrial network operators.
BTRC stated that the policy is designed to enforce accountability and improve services, particularly in rural and suburban areas where complaints are most prevalent.
