Benapole Customs House has surpassed its revenue target for the fiscal year 2024-25, collecting Tk70.22 billion against a target of Tk67.05 billion. This represents a 4.72 percent increase, or Tk3.17 billion more than the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) target.
Customs officials attributed the higher revenue collection to strict monitoring, accurate valuation of imported goods, and effective supervision by customs authorities, despite facing several challenges throughout the year.
In the previous fiscal year, 2023-24, Benapole Customs had also exceeded its target, collecting Tk61.67 billion against a goal of Tk59.48 billion.
Stakeholders said the revenue growth came despite political and economic instability, as well as disruptions caused by strikes and shutdowns from the NBR Reform Unity Council. Matior Rahman, director of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries, credited continuous oversight by customs officials for maintaining revenue performance during difficult periods.
Benapole port remains Bangladesh’s largest land customs station, handling nearly 80 percent of land-based imports from India. Annually, goods worth around Tk400 billion are imported through the port, generating roughly Tk100 billion in government revenue.
In FY 2024-25, the port handled 1.53 million tonnes of imports, a slight decrease from 1.58 million tonnes in the previous year. Despite this decline, revenues rose due to strengthened customs procedures.
On the export side, Benapole facilitated shipments totaling 381,441 tonnes in FY 2024-25, down from 350,775 tonnes the previous year.
Port officials said infrastructure development at Benapole is ongoing to support future trade growth.
