Operations at Chattogram Port, Bangladesh’s main seaport, have been suspended for a third consecutive day as workers protest the planned lease of the New Mooring Container Terminal to Dubai-based DP World.
The strike, which began on January 31, has brought cargo handling to a halt. Loading and unloading of containers and bulk goods have stopped, and truck movements in and out of the port have ceased. Workers at all levels, including dock staff, terminal employees, and drivers, have joined the protest.
Industry leaders warned that the stoppage is severely affecting the ready-made garment (RMG) sector.
BGMEA Acting President Selim Rahman urged the port authorities to take immediate action to resume normal operations.
The Port Protection Movement Committee, announced a further 24-hour work stoppage on Tuesday.
Authorities have already transferred 16 workers to other terminals in Dhaka and Narayanganj.
