Google has officially launched its digital payment platform, Google Pay, in Bangladesh for the first time, in partnership with The City Bank.
The launch event took place on Monday at The Westin Dhaka, with Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur inaugurating the service. The initiative is the result of a collaboration among City Bank, Google, Mastercard, and Visa.
City Bank customers can now link their Mastercard or Visa cards to Google Wallet and make contactless payments via their Android smartphones using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The service will work at compatible terminals in Bangladesh and abroad.
With end-to-end encryption and secure storage, Google Pay enables users to make fast, private transactions without the need for physical cards.
“This is a major step in our digital journey. We welcome Google Pay to Bangladesh and expect it to contribute to a more investor-friendly ecosystem,” said Governor Mansur.
City Bank CEO Mashrur Arefin added, “This reflects our commitment to driving digital innovation in Bangladesh’s financial sector.”
Also present were Shammi Quddus of Google Payments, Syed Mohammad Kamal of Mastercard Bangladesh, and Sabbir Ahmed of Visa Bangladesh.
Google Pay’s launch is expected to transform everyday transactions—from travel to shopping—by turning smartphones into secure digital wallets.
