In a recent development, the government has given the green light to 79 traders to export a total of 3,950 tonnes of hilsa fish to India.

This permission is valid until October 30. Each of these firms has been granted the opportunity to ship 50 tonnes of this popular fish, as outlined in a notice issued by the commerce ministry.

The decision to grant export permits follows applications from these firms to export hilsa fish to India. 

This surge in demand coincides with the upcoming Durga Puja festival. 

Despite a standing ban on hilsa fish exports from Bangladesh, the ministry annually receives numerous requests from exporters seeking approval to send this fish to India before the religious festival.

Last year, the commerce ministry authorized the shipment of 2,900 tonnes of hilsa fish to India. However, the actual exported quantity fell short, with traders sending only 1,352 tonnes of the fish, as reported by an official from the ministry.
