The government has warned mobile operators to lower internet prices or face regulatory consequences, as officials push for affordable digital access across Bangladesh.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser with executive authority over the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, issued the warning during a press conference at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Thursday, marking World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025.
“We have already reduced prices at the gateway and transmission levels. Now it’s time for operators to follow through at the user level,” Taiyeb said.
He noted that while many stakeholders cooperate, some operators have yet to take action. “If they don’t respond, we will bring unresolved dues and performance indicators into the discussion,” he warned.
Taiyeb said the government remains open to logical waivers but will challenge any unjustified positions. “We want dialogue, not conflict. But citizens deserve quality internet at fair prices, and we will stay firm on that.”
BTRC Chairman Major General (retd) Md Emdad ul Bari echoed the call, stating that while immediate price cuts are unlikely, reducing internet costs remains a top priority. He added that the commission supports a deregulated market for pricing flexibility and service diversity.
Responding to a query about a recent 4G outage, Bari confirmed that BTRC has formally asked Grameenphone for an explanation regarding Wednesday’s 40-minute disruption.
Officials reaffirmed their commitment to holding operators accountable and ensuring affordable, reliable internet for all.
